Can you tell me anything about plantar warts? My kids have them on their feet. What is the best treatment?
Warts on the bottom of the foot are called plantar warts. They are caused by one of the many types of human papillomavirus. Plantar warts tend to be more troublesome and painful than warts located elsewhere on the body, simply because of the constant pressure from standing and walking.
The pressure flattens out the warts, which makes treatment more complicated than other types of warts because much of the plantar wart is located under the skin’s surface. I would not recommend treating plantar warts with home or drugstore remedies.
Doctors may use salicylic acid in a solution or a plaster to destroy the warts. They may also use cutting or freezing techniques to remove them.
Treatment is difficult and does not always work. In some cases, the warts may return after treatment. Plantar warts will eventually go away by themselves, but it may take a few years before they do.
