I am a 21 year old college student who falls asleep very easily. If I am not in a constant state of activity, I nod off for a couple minutes and then fall into a deep sleep. Are there any medical conditions to be aware of that may be causing this?
Yes, there are several conditions that can cause excessive sleepiness. On the other hand, this could be a perfectly natural response to a very stressful period in your life. It is not at all uncommon for people in your age group to be sleepy and take frequent naps.
College is very taxing, emotionally, physically and intellectually, and many students are simply exhausted. It can be additionally burdensome if you are living away from home for the first time, perhaps not eating well or taking care of yourself.
What you don’t need is one more thing to worry about. So get yourself checked out. Make an appointment with your family doctor for a complete physical exam.
If you are away from home and don’t have a doctor, contact your school’s infirmary or health clinic. Jot down a few notes on your sleepiness, such as how and when you fall asleep and whether you feel fatigued all the time, and bring them with you to your checkup.
